The upper North Shore starts north of Chatswood and stretches to the Hawkesbury River and is home to some of the oldest residential areas of Sydney. Consisting of mainly residential and bushland suburbs, the area is widely known for its extensive gardens, mature European trees and family-friendly neighbourhoods.

In 2021, the North Shore had a population of over 78,893, and with its easy access to public transport and a range of excellent public and private schools, it is no wonder families like to call the upper North Shore home. The region has a median house price of between $1.5 million and $3.5 million (2021).

Things to see and do at North Shore

Whether you’re looking forward to a laid-back life or a gastronomic adventure, there's something for everyone on the upper North Shore.

For birdwatchers, the Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve is a must-see and contains some of the last remaining blue-gum forests that once dominated the Sydney landscape. Or if bushwalking and picnics are more your thing, head to the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden in St Ives and explore bushland, gullies, ponds, and waterfalls, you never know, you might even spot a swamp wallaby.

The Rose Seidler House is a must-see if you're interested in architecture. This famed Australian Modernist architecture has been beautifully preserved and features spectacular views of Ku-ring-gai National Park.

Or perhaps walk down the tree-lined, shady streets of Wahroonga, or explore Pymble Park, head to the markets at St Ives, and see the heritage-listed sites at Gordon or Lindfield. Food and drink on the North Shore include a diverse range of cuisines. If you’re looking for a good burger, head to the garden tap in North Turramurra, or after a glass of wine, Cellar 8 wine bar in Pymble is your go-to bar. There is also a great range of cafés, international cuisine restaurants and budget-friendly RSL clubs.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly region with larger blocks and easy access to good schools, recreation, and delicious dining options, then the North Shore may be the ideal place to call home. Perhaps, its bustling real estate market may give you irresistible options to realise your dream home as a mover or get the best value from your property as a homeowner.
